Twenty-six people have died of poisoning after drinking locally made alcohol in Russia’s Arenburg region.
Authorities said on Saturday that the men had died of alcohol-related poisoning in the border region of Kazakhstan this week.

The death toll rose to nine on Thursday, the regional ministry told the RIA Novosti news agency.

Another 26 people are suffering from alcohol-related poisoning, they said.

Russia’s regional branch of the Investigative Committee has launched an investigation into the safety of alcohol sold in the region, about 1,500 kilometers southeast of the capital Moscow, Reuters reported.

The committee said on Friday that six people had been arrested on charges of producing non-alcoholic alcohol.

Following an incident of alcohol-related mass poisoning in Siberia in 2016, national authorities ordered tighter controls on the production and sale of high-ethanol-containing beverages, medicines, perfumes and other liquids.
