More than 200,000 child priests have been sexually abused in France since the 1950s, according to a commission of inquiry.
The report was released on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

The commission alleges that the Catholic Church has long been blind to such crimes.

Most of the children tortured by the clergy were boys, many between the ages of 10 and 13, said Jean-Marc Sov, head of the commission.

The church has not taken the necessary steps to stop such abuse, but has sometimes deliberately allowed children to come into contact with the perpetrators, he said.

Eric de Mulla-Buffo, archbishop of Reims and head of the French clergy, expressed embarrassment after the report was unveiled at a public event, apologized and promised to take action.

The commission was set up by the Catholic Bishop of France in late 2016 to shed light on sexual harassment and restore public confidence in the Catholic Church. The Commission has acted individually.

At the release of the report, Sove said such problems still exist in churches. Until the 2000s, the Catholic Church disagreed with victims of sexual abuse. This attitude started to change in 2015-16.

The Soviets also called for reform of the Catholic Church. He said that in the church, sexuality, obedience and the sanctity of the priests were taught in such a way that the priests were given the opportunity to be tortured.

The Catholic Church needs to reform its approach to these issues in order to gain the trust of society, Sove said.

He said the commission of inquiry had called for witnesses to identify 2,700 victims of sexual abuse by French priests, and thousands more names had been found in the archives.

According to research and survey groups, the number of abused children stands at around 216,000. They also believe that this number could reach 330,000 if church members are sexually abused.

In the last 60 years, there have been between 2,900 and 3,200 suspected child molesters in French churches, Sove said.

“You are a disgrace to society,” said Franco Debo, who spoke before the Soviets at the launch of the investigation report.

Debo has founded an organization called La Perolo Libere with victims of torture at the hands of priests.

“There have been all the heinous crimes in this hell. What is worse is the betrayal of confidence, the betrayal of morality, the betrayal of children, ”he said.
